NALA Membership Agreement

I agree to use a High Level Disinfection to disinfect my tweezers between each client. Where Barbicide is required by state regulations, I will use Barbicide before following the steps of the NALA Decontamination Guide.

I agree to adhere to the NALA Decontamination Guide for disinfecting my tools, equipment and work station.

I agree to wear gloves during lash treatments and to honour glove protocol in order to prevent contamination of the gloves. If gloves become contaminated or damaged I will change my gloves immediately.

I agree to never give a client medical advice. I understand this is a liability. I will always refer my clients to a doctor or ophthalmologist in case of an emergency or negative reaction.

I agree to apply a sample sets to anyone who:

  1. Has had a reaction to similar treatments in the past, or
  2. Has expressed a concern about a potential allergy or negative reaction

in order to determine whether or not a client is an ideal candidate for lash extension services.

I understand that performing a sample set on EVERY new client may be required by my insurance provider. I agree to comply with my insurance company’s policy.

I agree to follow these exact steps for applying a sample set for the purpose of determining whether or not a client is an ideal candidate for lash extensions:

  1. Follow all of your typical prep steps (your client may actually react to your prep products). Washing, priming, protecting lower lashes, etc.
  2. Apply 10 - 20 extensions on the outer corner of each eye.
  3. Follow all of the same steps you perform after a full application. Washing, sealant, misting, etc. Whatever your steps typically consist of.
  4. Wait at least 24 hours.
  5. If the client displays symptoms of irritation (redness, swelling, peeling, bumps, etc), remove the extensions (use the remover gel/cream if the skin is not too raw. If the skin is red and swollen, or cracking, you will need to “pick-n-peel” each extension off to avoid further irritating the skin). Advise the client to go to their doctor or ophthalmologist for diagnosis and/or treatment. NEVER give medical advice.
  6. If the client wishes to have lash extensions applied in the future, they must undergo a proper allergy test at their doctor’s office to discover which product caused the irritation. You can then determine if it is possible to provide lash extensions for the client without the product that they are irritated by. Some examples are the lash shampoo, or the under-eye gel pad.
  7. If the sensitivity test does not reveal any irritation, apply the full set but pay attention for any possible signs of irritation.

NOTE: Passing the sensitivity test does not guarantee that your client won’t have a reaction to a full set. There was a reason you did the test in the first place, so pay attention.

I agree to dispose of all porous tools and implements that cannot be disinfected after each client. These items include under eye gel pads, applicators, spoolies, etc.

I agree to keep my space clinically clean. My space will be equipped with smooth surfaces for wiping and will not have fuzzy blankets, cushions, rugs, carpet, or similar. My linens will be disposable or changed and laundered between each client. My treatment table will be smooth and non-porous.

I agree to always keep an unopened bottle of sterile eye wash within arm's reach for emergencies while applying lash extensions. I confirm that I know the steps to effectively irrigate the eye if needed.

I agree to keep contact lens solution and disposable contact cases on hand for clients who forget to bring their own.

I agree to never pull lash extensions directly from the manufacturer's lash tray (or similar original packaging) during a service. I will take out only the amount needed for the current client’s service and place small strips of extensions on a disinfected tile. I will discard all leftover extensions at the end of that client’s service. I agree to never save lash extensions for another appointment. I agree to store my lash extensions in a clear storage container.

NOTE: Use a sterile blade to cut the extension strips into smaller strips to avoid unnecessary waste. Here’s a video tutorial to follow (please wear gloves when cutting trays).

I agree to have every client sign a waiver form and photo release form before treatments. I will never perform services on a client without them signing a waiver form first.

I agree to perform a thorough consultation with every client before every treatment.

I agree to never perform lash treatments on a client who displays any number of the following:

  • Conjunctivitis
  • Blepharitis
  • Pink Eye
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Skin irritation near the eye area
  • Sign of infection
  • Sign of irritation
  • Contact lenses
  • Stye
  • Cuts or open wounds
  • Medications (which, of course, we never discuss in detail because we are not pharmacists)
  • Hay Fever/Allergies
  • Recent eye surgeries/treatments
  • Alopecia
  • Lash lice (not the same as mites)
  • Ocular herpes
  • Trichotillomania

Note: There is a long list of things we are looking for but basically we need to simply look for signs of illness, infection or irritation. “The three i’s of the eyes.” - quote by Levi Shephard. We do not want to apply extensions if there is already trauma to the eye area. We must NEVER discuss treatments or give advice about any of the above listed contraindications. Our job is only to inform clients that we have reason to believe they are not an ideal candidate for lash extensions at this time. We may suggest they visit a Doctor or Ophthalmologist for diagnosis. Clients must be symptom-free for a minimum of two weeks before attempting any lash treatment (6-8 weeks after any eye surgery).

I agree to never perform services on a client that has proven to be allergic to the treatment in the past or that displays any signs of contraindications - illness, infection, or irritation. In this case, I agree to inform the client that it would be irresponsible to apply lash extensions to them and politely turn them away. I confirm that I will never work on a client that is not an ideal client for lash enhancement services.

I agree to always prioritize proper isolation of the natural lashes when applying lash extensions in order to ensure that there are no “stickies”. It is vital that the lashes are not stuck together. This can be uncomfortable and even painful for the client as the lashes grow. It may also cause permanent damage to the hair follicles if they are continually pulled on due to improper adhesion.

I promise to never apply consumer-grade cluster or strip lashes with professional adhesive. I understand that professional adhesive creates a semi-permanent bond. Consumer products are too heavy to be worn for more than 24 hours. Also, professional adhesive must never touch the skin and we cannot allow it to adhere to the natural lashes together because it will cause pain and damage.

I understand the difference between consumer and professional lash adhesive. Consumer glue is not for long term use. It is intended to be used on occasion. It has a weaker bond and will release in approximately 24 hours after application. Professional lash adhesive creates a nearly permanent bond and must be used ONLY by a trained professional.

I agree to always provide my clients with professional and proper aftercare in order to maintain the lash and eye health as well as maximum retention. My aftercare contains the following:

  • Do not rub, pick or pull lash extensions
  • Cleanse eyes thoroughly with eyelash cleanser daily
  • Brush your lashes daily
  • Do not use oil based products
  • Do not wear waterproof mascara unless it is specially formulated for lash extensions
  • Contact your lash artist immediately if you experience any itching, swelling, redness or discomfort.
  • We used to advise our clients NOT to get their lashes wet for 24 hours. It has now been proven by Jill Heijligers-Peloquin of Lash FX Global® and her collaborator Doug Schoon of Schoon Scientific that washing the lashes 5 minutes after application is not only okay, but it is beneficial. Washing the lashes does not affect lash retention and it drastically reduces the chances of your client being irritated by the treatment by removing any chemicals from the lashes and eye area.

I promise to always prioritize the health of my clients' natural lashes. I will not apply lash extensions or fans of extensions that are too heavy for my clients’ natural lash.

I agree to always adhere to and uphold NALA Standards, NALA Professional Guidelines, and the NALA Code of Ethics as a NALA Member.

I understand that in the case it is discovered that I do not uphold the standards and agreement of a NALA Member, my Membership may be revoked.
